Facebook Lite app has officially been launched for Android users in India and Philippines. At the time Facebook Lite app was available only in Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Nigeria, Sudan, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
Facebook Lite specifically designed for low bandwidth usage in emerging markets. The Facebook Lite uses less data and is designed for 2G networks and areas with slow or unstable connections.
Facebook claims to have 118 million monthly active users in India (as of March 2015) of which over 89% are on mobile, has been exploring various avenues of reaching a greater share of users on slow mobile connections.
Facebook already has official Android app so why people need Lite version?
Facebook Lite features all standard Facebook functions, like push notifications, chat including group conversation, and sharing on updates and photos among others.
The Facebook Lite edition only takes up 435 KB of storage. It quickly install and takes up less space than the regular version. Facebook Lite aimed at people with low-end Android devices and slow or unstable 2G network connections and poor quality of internet connections. Requires Facebook Messenger as a separate app if you want to chat with your friends, is over 25 MB in size and its companion messenger app is over 16 MB in size.
Vijay Shankar, product manager for Facebook Lite says “The app is available in countries across Asia and will soon make its way to parts of Latin America, Africa and Europe.”
